Artist Reflections

In the famous Hero’s Journey, a model derived from Joseph Campbell and echoed in countless stories, the hero, the driving force of the narrative, descends into the night world, the unknown. It is a realm of challenges and sorrow, where survival demands immense courage. Eventually, the hero reemerges into the day world, transformed, enriched, and grown by their journey. This is what most of us long for in life’s trials: to emerge from the darkness, safe and sound, and stronger than before. 

This longing defines the protagonists of “Sperarci Due Eroi”: my parents. As cancer threatens my mother’s life, the outcome of the journey remains uncertain. There is no promise of triumph, only hope and determination to go on, not because success is assured, but because the journey itself is meaningful. 

One thing is certain: love can sustain us through the darkest time. Love is necessary: committed, brave love. We may not have the power to change the outcome, but we do have the power to love, to be present, and to offer comfort. It is in these acts of connection and kindness that we find and give strength, testifying to the profound impact we can have on one another’s lives.
